MS Dhoni’s finishing ability has seen a steady decline over the past few years. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest finishers in India. However, in some matches, he couldn’t finish the game well.
In 2015, India vs South Africa at Kanpur, India lost the match by just 5 runs. In the last over, India just needed 11 runs. He scored 2 runs on the first ball and 1 run on the second ball. However, he could not perform well on the 4th ball. He tried to slog across the line but ended up top-edging which was taken by Kagiso Rabada.
Selecting players despite their poor performance
He often keeps faith in his players and has sometimes backed the cricketers despite their consistent poor performance. During the 2012-‘13 season, Dhoni backed the selection of Rohit Sharma and promoted him to the opener’s slot despite his poor performance.

Dhoni took over the Test captaincy from Anil Kumble in 2008. However, India failed to win any overseas series from 2011 onwards under his captaincy. Later on, Virat Kohli took the captaincy.

When Dhoni became captain, he dropped most of the seniors from the future ODI series due to their poor performance. He gave chances to many young players.
