Priyanka Gandhi attacks govt over suppressing Covid-19 data & keeping propaganda a priority
On Monday, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi accused the Narendra Modi’s government of ‘suppressing’ Covid-19 data and keeping ‘propaganda’ on priority that led to extreme damage. She used her “Zimmedaar Kaun (who is responsible)” campaign for targeted blazing questions on government for its handling of coronavirus pandemic. The Congress general secretary also asked questions on the Covid-19 data put out by the government.
Taking over her social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, Ms. Gandhi asked that why it was more important to save the image of prime minister than saving people’s lives. She also accused the government of using false Covid-19 data as a “propaganda tool” to safeguard the image of the Centre. “From the very start of the pandemic, the Modi government’s attitude towards data was to utilize it as a propaganda tool rather than an invaluable weapon in the fight against Covid-19,” Priyanka Gandhi added. She alleged that the government used its resources to continuously suppress and manipulate data to serve the government’s political agenda even while lives were being lost in “battling the scourge of a century”.
To further strengthen her accusation, Gandhi said that since the beginning of the pandemic, infections and deaths were reported as a ratio to the population while testing was presented as an absolute figure. “This was designed to mislead the public into believing that the infection and death rates were not alarming, while the testing rates were sufficient. In fact, it was exactly the opposite,” she said. She added that same pattern is being followed by Modi government in presenting vaccination data. “The Modi government’s emphasis on propaganda over saving lives has caused immense damage. It is answerable to the people of India,” Gandhi asserted.
Elaborating the recent news of over 2000 bodies being found along 1000 km stretch of river Ganga, Priyanka Gandhi said that area was entirely in 27 districts of Uttar Pradesh which failed to include in government records. “Instead, when drone footage revealed hundreds of shallow graves along the Ganga in cities like Prayagraj, the UP government immediately set up a “Safaai Abhiyan” (cleaning programme) aimed at obliterating any sign of the graves,” the Congress general secretary alleged.
