PM Modi to Attend Mauritius’ National Day as Chief Guest: A historic visit

Next month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be the special guest at the National Day celebrations of Mauritius. Mauritian Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam announced this, symbolizing the strong friendship between the two countries.
Ramgoolam said on Friday in the National Assembly that it is a great honor for Mauritius to welcome such a distinguished leader while he is busy with many affairs.
National Day is commemorated every March 12 as the day Mauritius received independence from British rule in 1968. Ramgoolam said: “I am pleased to inform the House that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has graciously accepted my invitation to be the chief guest this year, which will mark our 57th independence anniversary.”
He mentioned that Modi has also recently finished visits to Paris and the United States and said how busy he is as a result. A visit to Mauritius symbolizes the great ties we have built together, said the Prime Minister of Mauritius.
Good Bilateral Trade Relationship between India and Mauritius

- Since 2005, India has been the largest trading partner of Mauritius.
- India’s main exports to Mauritius comprise petroleum products, medicines, cereals, cotton, seafood, and beef.
- Mauritius’s exports to India contain vanilla, medical devices, aluminum alloys, scrap paper, refined copper, and cotton shirts.
- In 2024, Mauritius is estimated to have invested about $8 billion in India, backed by the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA).
The two countries signed the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation and Partnership Agreement (CECPA) in 2021, which is India’s first trade agreement with an African nation.
Unified Payment Interface (UPI) and RuPay card facilities were introduced in Mauritius by India in 2024 for two-way transactions.
