People call coolie’s plot ‘problematic’, Sara Ali Khan comes to defense
Sara Ali Khan: Coolie no. 1, the 1995 movie starring Govinda and Karisma Kapoor, is being remade this year with Badlapur actor Varun Dhawan and Kedarnath actress Sara Ali Khan. Soon after the trailer was released, people started to question the plot of the movie calling it ‘problematic’.
On seeing this reaction, Khan has come in defense of the movie and is urging the audience to watch the movie with an open mind. She addresses the issue brought to light by people saying that everything cannot be made political.
In an interview, the actress was asked about the ‘problematic’ elements of the movie and especially Govinda’s character. Govinda’s character is Karisma’s character in the movies making her fall in love with him. She said that not everything should be viewed from a politically correct lens and if this happens every time, ‘any scope of humour in our lives will be lost’.
“I’d urge people to watch the film with the honest intention with which it is told. There is a difference between what you say on Twitter, and what an entertaining comedy tries to say. If everybody [expects] everything to be politically correct, any scope of humour in our lives will be [lost]. Of course, you can’t be demeaning. Govinda sir duping Karisma to make her believe that he is not a coolie, is funny. It’s not about him cheating. Ultimately, he falls in love with her, and that’s what most of us look forward to in life,” the 25-year-old actress said.
Then the actress explained that her skills are different from that of her parents and they should be compared. She said that she is not as spontaneous as her father or mother as far as comic timing is concerned. She added that comedy is a difficult genre to crack as it all about reacting to what the other person says.
She also credited Dhawan for his help in prepping her for the role saying that he is much more experienced in this genre.
The movie star asked fans not to compare her character or skills to Karisma saying that there is no point in trying to do what the vetran did and hence she will be bringing her own spin to the movie.
The movie is directed by director and father of Varun Dhawan, David Dawan and stars conditioned actors like Paresh Rawal, Javed Jaaferi, Rajpal Yadav, and Johnny Lever. It will be released on OTT platform Amazon Prime Video owing to the coronavirus pandemic in place.
Even though the government has allowed 50% capacity in theatres, movie stars are still going for the digital release due to concerns of the virus infection. Films like Laxmi starring Akshay Kumar and Sadad starring Alia Bhatt have also been released on these platforms.
