Opposition holds protest march against govt after monsoon session abruptly ended

Top leaders of at least 15 Opposition parties on Thursday carried out a protest march against the government on key issues, including the Pegasus controversy and abrupt conclusion of the monsoon session of parliament. Led by Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, leading Opposition leaders such as NCP chief Sharad Pawar and Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Raut joined the protest march outside parliament to raise their concerns. Furthermore, leaders from RJD, Samajwadi Party, DMK, CPI, RSP, and CPM joined the protest with Rahul Gandhi and others.

Carrying placards and banners against the government, Opposition leaders walked from Parliament House to Vijay Chowk as part of their protest. The banners read: ‘Stop the murder of democracy’ and ‘we demand Repeal of anti-farmers laws’.

Opposition slams govt

The Opposition also issued a joint statement accusing the government of deliberately derailing the monsoon session. Through the protest march, Opposition leaders called on Rajya Sabha chairman Venkaiah Naidu to file an official complaint against the alleged manhandling of Opposition lawmakers, including women MPs, in the lower house on Wednesday.

“Without any provocation… outsiders, who were not part of Parliament security, were brought in to manhandle opposition leaders and members, including women MPs who were only protesting the government’s conduct, highhandedness and muzzling of their voice,” the joint statement said.

Addressing the media, Rahul Gandhi alleged that 70 percent of the voice of lawmakers was crushed and humiliated as the government decided to end the Parliament session ahead of the scheduled time on August 13 amid protest. “On Wednesday, Rajya Sabha MPs were physically beaten,” he claimed.

NDA government’s response

In response, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi termed the Opposition’s allegation “totally false”, demanding them to check facts from CCTV footage. Hours later, the government addressed a press conference, demanding Opposition leaders to apologize for creating a ruckus in parliament during the monsoon session.

While Union Minister Piyush Goyal condemned the Opposition’s actions, the Parliamentary Affairs Minister called on Rajya Sabha Chairman Naidu to take strict action in the matter.

“The people of this nation gave the government a duty. But we all have seen how the opposition has been totally disruptive in not letting Parliament function. Anarchy from streets to Parliament was the opposition’s only agenda during the monsoon session. The opposition should feel shame and come out to apologize,” Sports Minister Anurag Thakur said, during the conference in presence of other ministers.

As per reports, the Lok Sabha functioned at only 22 percent productivity while Rajya Sabha worked for 28 percent during the monsoon session.
