NHRC Seeks Report Over Fate Of Ongoing Farmers Protests

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has finally issued notice to the Centre and four state governments on the adverse impact of the ongoing farmers protest on the transportation and industrial units.

The four states to be included in the complaint includes Delhi, Rajasthan, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. Issuing notices to the Chief Secretaries and relevant Director Generals of Police, the commission has called for each to submit their “respective Action Taken Reports.”

Many organizational bodies have been roped in to assess the adverse impact of the peaceful protests on various related industries and individuals. These include the National Disaster Management Authority, Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Health, Government of India apart from the Institute of Economic Growth (IEG). Those affected includes micro, medium and large companies apart from commuters, patients travelling for treatment, senior citizens, individuals with physical disabilities, etc.

Further, the report from the Commission said that the protests had severely breached Covid protocols leading to chances of mass spread of the more dangerous variant of the Corona virus.

Since November of last year, farmers have been repeatedly protesting against the Centre’s decision of the new agriculture laws. Farmers from the four mentioned states have been protesting at the Singhu Border and Tikri Border of Delhi-Haryana and Ghazipur border of Delhi-UP.

The commission is also seeking help from the Delhi School of Social Work, Delhi University, to depute teams to conduct a survey and submit a detailed report to assess the actual damage to the livelihood, well being of the aged and concerned repercussions to the ongoing protests.

Undeniably, as the protests come under the constitutional rights of carrying out protests in a peaceful manner, the farmers cannot be asked to move, vacated or used harsh power with, in any circumstances either. The Commission has declared that it has taken this point into consideration and has made certain arrangements towards that too, which were not mentioned explicitly in their report.
