Breaking: Stampede at Shitala Temple in Nalanda, Multiple Dead Amid Heavy Crowd

From religious celebration to mourning silence. At Nalanda, the stampede triggered the death of atleast eight people. The incident occurred at Shitala Mata Temple in Bihar’s Nalanda district on Tuesday (March 31, 2026). However, a large number of devotees were gathered around the temple for morning prayers.
The district administration has allegedly closed the temple premises to avoid further chaos. Bihar CM Nitish Kumar and Deputy CM Samrat Choudary affirmed to provide all possible assistance to the victims. They announced an ex gratia of ₹6 lakh for the families of the deceased
What Happened
According to initial reports, the stampede was triggered by heavy overcrowding inside the temple premises. Devotees had assembled for regular Tuesday prayers when a sudden surge in the crowd caused people to lose balance and fall.
The temple, located in the Maghada area, witnesses heavy footfall every Tuesday, attracting devotees from Nalanda and nearby districts.
Allegations of Mismanagement
Local residents have alleged lack of proper crowd control and security arrangements, which may have contributed to the tragedy.
Officials are now examining possible lapses in management and safety protocols.
Situation Now
The situation is currently under control with police and emergency teams deployed at the site. However, officials have indicated that the death toll may rise, as some injured remain critical.
