Mirabai Chanu was rewarded with the position of ASP by the Manipur government after Olympic heroics
Newly crowned silver medalist of the Tokyo Olympics 2020 Mirabai Chanu has returned to India only to be welcomed by huge celebrations and mega rewards. She has not only lived up to the expectations of the millions of Indians but performed beyond expectations having secured silver in Weightlifting, which is the first silver medal for India in this sport.
As she returned to India on July 26, she received huge applause at the airport, and not only this but the state government had also had something big in store for her return. The Manipur state government had announced a position of Assistant Superintendent of Police (Sports) in the Police department.
One of the media outlets, ANI, confirmed the news through a tweet. It said, “Manipur Government has decided to appoint Olympic Silver Medallist Saikhom Mirabai Chanu as Additional Superintendent of Police (Sports) in the police department: Chief Minister’s Secretariat, Imphal.”

Proud of the weightlifter’s performance, the Chief Minister of the state N Biren Sing had also earlier announced Rs 1 crore to Mirabai Chanu for her outstanding display of talent at the Tokyo Olympics.
While announcing the rewards, Sing said that Chanu does not need to collect tickets at the railway station now as there are some surprises planned for the athlete which will be revealed when he gets to have a word with the Home Minister and makes everything official.
He even posted a video of him congratulating Chanu through a video call.
Chanu also expressed her delight during the video calling and emphasized that the silver medal was only possible because of the prayers of the people from Manipur. She thanked them for constant support and keeping faith in her to be able to achieve something as big as this. “I am thankful to everyone in Manipur for their support. I am here today only because of their support,” she said.
Mirabai Chanu became India’s first medal for this year’s Olympics and also the first one on day one of the event. Before her, it was only Karnam Malleshwari who has won a medal in the event but this time, Chanu has managed to change the colour of the medal.
