On Friday Ministry of External Affairs expressed deep concern over US President Donald Trump’s recent claim that American aid funds were used to interfere in India’s elections. The controversy erupted after the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, revealed that USAID had allocated $21 million to India’s Election Commission to boost voter turnout.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal described the information released by the US administration as “deeply troubling” and raised serious concerns about foreign interference in India’s internal affairs. Trump’s Allegations
Trump, while addressing the Republican Governors Association meeting in Washington DC, criticized the now-canceled funding, calling it a “kickback scheme.” He questioned why US taxpayer money was being spent on India’s elections, adding, “We have enough problems of our own. Why must we spend $21 million on voter turnout in India?”
Political Fallout in India
Trump’s remarks sparked a fresh political battle between the BJP and Congress.
- BJP IT Cell Head Amit Malviya claimed that the funds were being used to support “deep-state assets” working to manipulate public opinion.
- Congress leader Pawan Khera hit back, questioning how the Modi government allowed such funds into India and pointed out that the BJP won in 2014 when USAID funds were allegedly disbursed under UPA rule.
With political tensions rising, the investigation into these allegations is expected to continue in the coming days.
