Mahindra Overtakes Hyundai to Become India’s Second Largest Automaker

After a dramatic turn of events in India’s automotive industry, Mahindra & Mahindra snatched away the title of India’s second-largest automaker from Hyundai Motor India in February, following a strong local market push 19% rise in sales hitting 50,420 units sold. Overall, Mahindra sold a total of 83,702 units, both export and domestic in February, while Hyundai reported 58,727 units in total, including 47,727 domestic sales.
The surge in Mahindra arrives as demand for its hit SUVs such as the Scorpio-N, Thar, XUV700 and XUV300 increases. Their high sales in the SUV segment have largely accounted for Mahindra’s success, leading it to become India’s largest SUV seller. The company’s April to January 2024-2025 revenue was at almost Rs 71,000 crore overtaking Hyundai’s Rs 58,653 crore, based on research firm JATO’s data.
Mahindra’s President of Automotive Division, Veejay Nakra had credited the 19% growth in February 2025 to the sustained positive trend in its SUV portfolio. On the contrary, Hyundai experienced a slowdown blaming geopolitical factors for its 2.93% drop in overall sales compared to February 2024.
With this solid performance, Mahindra has now captured the second position in passenger vehicle sales and only behind Maruti Suzuki. Hyundai is optimistic about sales going forward believing that tax reforms in the Union Budget will encourage demand over the next couple of months.
Mahindra’s largest carmaker for the first time in February 2025 achievement is an example of its resilience and capacity to evolve with market trends, particularly the increased demand for off-road vehicles making it the best in the changing Indian automotive market.
