Maha Shivratri 2023: What Is The Story Behind Lord Shiva’s Third Eye?
India is celebrating the Maha Shivratri today by worshiping the great Lord Shiva whose third eye is a symbolic reference to the sixth sense & extreme eternal power.
Lord Shiva is also referred to as Mahadeva because He is one of the most powerful and respected Tridev.
He was also worshiped by Ravana, the king of the rakshasas, Hiranyakashipu, the king of the asuras, and Indra, the king of the devas. Shiva is linked to many myths, particularly those mentioned in the Shiva Purana.
Shiva’s three eyes earned Him the name “Trilochan.” Shiva is the center of many remarkable legends, but the question of how He acquired His “Third Eye” is of particular interest.
Shiva was in profound meditation one day when Parvati, His wife, suggested playing a pastime with Him.
She came up behind Him and covered His eyes with both of Her hands. The moon and the sun are said to be represented by Shiva’s left and right eyes, respectively.

His closed eyes brought uncertainty and darkness into the world. Shiva immediately created the Third Eye on His forehead using His divine capacity to create fire.
The heat of the fire was making Parvati’s palms perspire. Andhaka was born as a consequence of the union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati’s energies with sweat.
According to legend, Shiva burnt Kamadeva, the Hindu god of desire, using His Third Eye. Kamadeva is said to have crept behind a tree and shot Shiva in the heart with an arrow.
Shiva started to feel uneasy. Lord opened His flaming Third Eye, burning the god of desire to ashes.
The festival of Mahashivratri is a particularly important one for people who worship Shiva. On this day, fasting is performed specifically as a form of worship for Lord Shiva.
The Mahashivratri fast is thought to be very advantageous for women. It is thought that on this day, Shiva and Parvati were united in marriage.
For single women, Mahashivratri fasting is believed to speed up the marriage process.
Also, married women in India follow the Mahashivaratri fast in an effort to ensure the fulfillment of their spouses.
