Today has been marked as a day of grief in the history of India especially in reference to art and culture as legendary dancer Pandit Birju Maharaj died at his residence in Delhi today. Many stars, Indian celebrities who were trained under him came to pay tribute to him.
One of his most popular and favorite ‘shishya’ or student Madhuri Dixit was among the first ones to pay her side of respect. She remembered her guru in an Instagram post with which she also shared a picture of the two. She expressed her respect and feelings for her guru in a note below.
The 83-year-old dancer has worked with Dixit in songs like Kaahe Chhed Mohe from Devdas and Jagaave Saari Raina from Dedh Ishqiya. As the actress talked about the legendary dancer, she said that he was a legend but always had a child-like innocence. “He was my guru but also my friend,” she added.
She added that he was the one to teach her intricacies of dance and even acting but still he never failed to make her laugh during the process. “He has left behind grieving fans and students but also left a legacy we will all carry forward,” she further stated.
Even though Pandit Birju Maharaj was known to be a dancer for the most part of his life, he was an equally, if not better, classical singer.
He came from the Maharaj family of Kathak dancers and was trained by his father and guru Acchan Maharaj and uncles Shambhu Maharaj and Lachhu Maharaj. He was also honored with the second-highest civilian honor, Padma Vibhushan, of the country for his contribution to the nation.
