KPSC Scam Probe: ED Arrests Suspended Chairman Over Karnataka Civil Services Exam Rules

The KPSC scam probe has intensified after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested suspended Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) chairman Shivashankarappa S Sahukar and KPSC member B V Geetha in connection with alleged irregularities in the recruitment of veterinary officers. The arrests have brought the investigation into the functioning of Karnataka’s premier government recruitment body under renewed scrutiny.
KPSC Recruitment Scam Under ED Investigation
The ED probe in connection with the scam is being conducted using the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The ED is investigating bribery, leak of the question papers and manipulation of the OMR sheets and merit list in the exam.
The case pertains to the recruitment exam for 400 posts of veterinary officers. As per the report, the candidates had been asked to deposit large sums of money in return for favoritism. Leakage of question papers before the exam is another allegation made against the recruiting board. The ED has already arrested former KPSC exam controller and IAS officer Gyanendra Kumar Gangwar and middleman Basavaraj Kannale.
Allegations Involving KPSC Officials
The role of Sahukar is under scrutiny due to some irregularities that were reported to happen during his period as a chairman. There are other allegations related to the hiring of his relatives.
The Governor of Karnataka suspended Sahukar based on allegations of misconduct. This issue has been characterized by other allegations such as the appointment of his daughter in the government sector.
Probe May Extend to Other KPSC Exams
However, the KPSC scam investigation is not confined to just the examination for the veterinarian recruitment process. It has been found out that there might be such irregularities in the conduct of other recruitment examinations during the same time period as well. The High Court of Karnataka had asked for a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate any recruitment irregularities, but this order was stayed by the Supreme Court when the Karnataka government took objection against it. These latest arrests show that the ongoing investigation into the integrity of the recruitment process in Karnataka is still going on.
