Kerala Police let the water cannons over BJP Protesters against the Waqf encroachment
On Tuesday, the BJP workers set a march together to the Secratariat of the Kerala to voice against the Waqf Board and their unlawful encroachment of both public and private properties. To stop the rally, Kerala police unleashed the water cannons on the BJP workers in Thiruvananthapuram and halted them from marching towards the State Secretariat.
Waqf Board
Under the Islamic law the properties which are donated for religious or charitable purposes is managed by the statutory body called Waqf Board. It was established in 1964 in India by the government of Nehru. These properties is known as waqf, and they build mosques, schools or orphanages with that they take care of the protection, revenue and administration of the board.
Why do they protest against Waqf Board?
BJP protested and accused against the Waqf board and the ruling CPI(M) government and their opposition party who reinforced the Waqf Bill with flaws. On November 12, Senior BJP leader Prakash Javadekar criticised the Bill which has given an unrestricted powers to the Board.
“If UDF and Ldf really want a permanent solution, they must support the Waqf amendment bill, moved by NDA government. It will remove arbitrary powers of Waqf board, bring transparency & accountability.
If you are not supporting the bill you are simply fooling hapless people of Munambam and Kerala. You can’t fool all the people all the time.”
At the State Assembly, both UDF (United Democratic Front) and LDF (Left Democratic Front) passed a resolution which is completely against the BJP-led Centre’s Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024.
The Union Government’s Waqf (Amendment) Bill states that the Board has a limited authority over the properties.
