Kerala Politics Heat Up: Vigilance Bureau and ED Step Up Scrutiny in CMRL Bribery Case Involving Pinarayi Vijayan

In recent times, there has been an upsurge of interest in the political scenario of Kerala, in light of recent developments in the CMRL-Exalogic bribe case against the former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, his daughter Veena T and former minister P. A. Mohamed Riyas.
Two FIRs have been filed by the Kerala VACB in connection with this case, while the ED has taken measures in accordance with the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The development has raised several political issues in regard to financial scandals and accountability of people holding public offices.
The ED has issued summons to Pinarayi Vijayan for appearing in front of them in their office located in Kochi on October 23, 2026.
Alleged Payments to Exalogic Solutions
The core of this controversy lies in the claims of the payments allegedly done by CMRL, which is a Kochi-based mineral processing company to Exalogic Solutions, which is an IT company owned by Veena T.
The claim of the payment of crores of rupees to Exalogic Solutions for consulting and IT services during the tenure of the previous Left Democratic Front government has been investigated by the ED and details of which have been submitted to the relevant authorities in the state.
Cases taken up by the Vigilance Bureau have accused officials of misusing their official position and financial improprieties.
Vijayan, Veena T and Riyas have all denied the claims against them.
Kerala High Court Order Triggers Fresh Action
An FIR was ordered to be registered on the basis of the material collected by the ED. In a later development, the High Court disposed of appeals filed by Vijayan and his family members to set aside the said order.
The order from the High Court made way for the Vigilance Bureau to carry out its investigation. In this connection, the Bureau has set up investigative teams to look into the transactions.
On the other hand, Vijayan had moved the Supreme Court against the said order. On October 16, the Supreme Court refused to hear him immediately and said that he might get a chance while it is in vacation.
The summons issued by the ED has brought another layer of litigation.
Political Reactions Intensify
The issue has turned out to be a highly controversial one in the politics of Kerala. While the opposition leaders have pointed out issues related to accountability and abuse of power, the leaders of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) have termed the case politically motivated.
The issue has put back into focus the issue of the role of investigation authorities, state machinery, and political leadership. The resolution will depend on the facts found through the legal process.
What Happens Next?
It is anticipated that the Vigilance Bureau will study the financial documents and payment tracks and take further actions in its investigation. The ED will continue with its investigation into the case under its legal mandate.
The decision of the Supreme Court on the challenge raised by Vijayan might impact the process of the investigation.
At the moment, the CMRL-Exalogic case still remains a legal issue. The political implications will be determined by the results of the investigation.
