Karnataka Congress MLA apologises over shocking “enjoy rape” statement
Karnataka – On Thursday, a senior Congress leader in Karnataka issued an apology hours after his “enjoy rape” remark in the state Assembly triggered massive criticism and outrage. MLA K. R. Ramesh Kumar apologized for his “indifferent and negligent” comment, but controversially called it an “off the cuff remark” in his apology clarifying the statement. “My intention was not trivialise or make light of the heinous crime, but an off-the-cuff remark! I will choose my words carefully henceforth!” Congress MLA K. R. Ramesh Kumar said last night in a tweet.
MLA Kumar had made the outrageous statement during a discussion in the Karnataka State Assembly on farmers issues. When the Speaker Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri asked how to conduct the session if time is allotted to everyone. Speaker had asked, “Whatever you decide – I will say yes. What I am thinking is that let us enjoy the situation. I can’t control or regulate the system. My concern is about the business of the house, it has also to be covered.” To this MLA K. R. Ramesh Kumar commented, “There is a saying that when rape is inevitable, lie down and enjoy it. That is exactly the position which you are in.”
The other unfortunate part of the incident was that all other leaders present laughed out in response.
