The director, on the other hand, has never been afraid to speak his thoughts or defend himself. Here are the top five recent scandals in which the filmmaker has been involved.
Alleged drug party
Karan Jonar, who is known for being a kind host and arranging lavish parties, was embroiled in a scandal in 2019 after uploading a candid video from a get-together. Deepika Padukone, Arjun Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, Ranbir Kapoor, Shahid Kapoor, Malaika Arora, and Vicky Kaushal were among the A-listers who attended the party, according to a video uploaded by Karan himself. “Saturday night vibes,” he captioned the photo.

Reports of drugs being ingested at the party began to appear as soon as the post went viral. In a series of tweets, Shiromani Akali Dal MLA Manjinder Singh Sirsa alleged that the performers were under the influence of drugs and challenged them to prove him wrong by taking a drug test. Karan later clarified the situation in an interview, saying, “There were high-achieving individuals of the industry who were enjoying a relaxing night out after a long week at work. I took that video with all sincerity… I wouldn’t be putting that video out if nothing was going on, I’m not stupid.”
Hardik Pandya/KL Rahul at KWK
Koffee With Karan, Karan Johar’s talk show, has also been the source of controversy. It happened in the sixth episode of the previous season in 2019, when batsmen Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul were featured. Hardik and Rahul were heavily chastised after the episode aired for their misogynistic remarks. They were even sent home in the middle of an ODI series in Australia as punishment, which their teammates thought was “fair.” Karan felt guilty for the consequences, thus the episode was pulled down. While many people chastised Hardik and Rahul for their insensitivity, others claimed Karan was also to blame.

‘Flag-bearer of Nepotism’
Kangana Ranaut was involved in another scandal that began on the KWK sofa and quickly swept throughout the business. The episode involves Kangana Ranaut and Saif Ali Khan, and her remark about nepotism quickly became a topic of conversation.
Karan was even dubbed the “flag-bearer of nepotism” by her. Since then, the matter has been a source of debate, leading to a slew of other dramatic occasions in which Bollywood actors have been asked to take sides. It resulted in star kids being chastised and scrutinised, while also providing greater opportunities for talent from outside the industry.
Deepika/Sonam at KWK
This was more of a week’s worth of fun for Karan Johar’s supporters across the country than an issue. Many people were taken aback by the episode of Koffee With Karan 3 that featured Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor.

Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor have subsequently reconciled and even collaborated on several projects, although the two had recently split up when the episode aired. Fans were eager to see how the show would turn out, especially since it was rumoured that Sonam Kapoor had dated Ranbir. “A condom company,” Deepika responded when Karan Johar asked her and Sonam which product their ex should represent. The episode has become a fan favourite due to several major disclosures from the show.
Ae Dil Hai Mushkil
Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, a multi-starrer, was said to be Karan’s passion project. However, due to a variety of factors, including a controversy courted by Karan Johar, the film did not perform well at the box office. The film was released shortly after the Uri incident, which resulted in the deaths of 19 Indian soldiers. Working with Pakistani artists was prohibited by the All Indian Cine Workers Association at the time. Fawad Khan, a Pakistani actor, played a major role in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, and Karan was requested to reshoot the scenes, but he refused and chose to pay the punishment instead.
Ajay Devgn, whose film Shivaay was also releasing on the same weekend as Karan’s, was also involved in another scandal when he leaked a video of Karan’s chat with Kamaal R Khan. Karan had asked KRK to deliver a favourable review of his film in exchange for some remuneration, according to the tape. As a result, Karan lost his friendship with Kajol, who replied to her husband’s post with the word “shocked.” However, the two have reconciled over time.
