Jackfruit Makes Bus Drivers Test Positive for Alcohol Without Drinking

Three bus drivers in Kerala, India, were put in such an odd position that a simple jackfruit could make them fail alcohol breath tests. The accident that happened in a Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus depot depictss that nature is sometimes the best deceiver of modern technology. Such an incident with jackfruit has turned out to be a topic of discussion in the whole of India, as this is another side effect that people did not expect when they ate ripe jackfruit.

What Happened at the Kerala Bus Depot

The incident happened last week at the Pandalam depot in Pathanamthitta district. Three KSRTC bus drivers had to prepare themselves for the morning shift once they discovered themselves having their routine breath check for alcohol. This jackfruit incident began just like any normal day, but turned weird.

When the drivers blew into the breathaliser, it gave a reading of 10, which is above the legal limit for alcohol. The surprising thing is? None of these drivers had drunk a drop of alcohol. They were stone cold sober and on the job.

The drivers were baffled as they thought they had not been drinking. They claimed they were innocent and none of them had touched a drop of booze. The depot officials were also shocked by these jackfruit-related test results.

It was finally discovered when people detected a heavy odor in the room. One of the drivers had fetched very mature jackfruit in Kottarakara in Kollam district. This jackfruit was so overripe that it began to ferment naturally, producing alcohol like compounds.

The KSRTC officials were not ready to ignore their theory that jackfruit was the root cause of false positive findings, and so they chose to conduct a test. They have requested one of their drivers who was negative in their previous test to consume some pieces of the same jackfruit. The driver was also asked to take another breath test after consuming jackfruit.

Amazing were the results, the breathalyzer was positive with alcohol yet again!. This jackfruit experiment confirmed that the fruit was the guilty party in presenting false alcohol results.
