Gaganyaan Mission from ISRO: First Uncrewed Launch Expected Late 2025

India is taking a step towards ushering in the era of human spaceflight. With the Gaganyaan mission, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will be sending Indian astronauts into space for the first time, after conducting years of research, testing, and development, with the uncrewed launch anticipated in late 2025. This mission is an important milestone in India’s path to join a small cohort of countries that have successfully undertaken human spaceflight, demonstrating the country’s growing capabilities and developments in space science and technology.

• The first uncrewed test of the Gaganyaan mission is planned for the end of 2025.
• This test will be used to validate the crew module, escape system, and life support systems.
• If the uncrewed test flight is a success, ISRO will pursue a crewed Gaganyaan mission in 2026 with Indian Astronauts (Gagannauts) then returning back to low Earth orbit.
• In addition, two uncrewed missions were planned, including one with a humanoid robot, Vyommitra.
• The mission would be flown on an upgraded GSLV Mk III.

The project aims to put India in an exclusive group of nations capable of human spaceflight, including the US, Russia, and China.India’s readiness to enter space history grows ever closer. Through the Gaganyaan mission, ISRO plans to send Indian astronauts to space for the first time. After many years of research, producing multiple tests and innovations, ISRO has returned to the launch countdown ahead of the first uncrewed launch, which is slated to occur by the end of 2025. This represents a significant movement in India’s pursuit of new capabilities to formally join the ranks of nations with a human spaceflight program effectively earning its place within the other modern space nations and placing it firmly as a rising power in space science and technology.
