Instagram Explains How Your Posts, Stories, Reels Get Ranked
Instagram chief has revealed Instagram algorithm secrets behind feeds, Reels, Stories. Here is how your photos & videos get ranked on the platform!
Instagram has made an effort to provide better transparency regarding its algorithm by publishing a blog post by Adam Mosseri, the Chief of Instagram.
The blog post shed light on the elusive ranking algorithm and introduced new features in response to creator feedback.
Mosseri clarifies that Instagram does not have a single algorithm but rather multiple algorithms, classifiers, and processes for different parts of the app.
For the Feed, Instagram considers factors such as users’ activity on the platform, information about the post and the person who posted it, and users’ interaction history. These pieces of information are used to create a set of predictions to personalize the user experience.
Interactions like spending time on a post, commenting, liking, sharing, and tapping on the profile photo are closely monitored. The higher the likelihood of user actions and the more weight given to those actions, the higher the post will appear in the Feed.
In the case of Stories, ranking is based on how often users view an account’s stories, engage with them, and the closeness of the user’s relationship with the author.
Predictions are made to determine the relevance and value of stories, considering actions such as tapping into a story, replying, or moving on to the next one.
As for Reels, data on user activity, such as liking, saving, resharing, commenting, and engagement, is taken into account.
The algorithm also considers the user’s history of interaction with the creator, information about the Reels, and the person who posted them.
By providing insights into how these algorithms work, Instagram aims to offer clarity on how creators’ content can be surfaced and reach can be improved.
