IndiGo Flights Cancellation: Over 470 Flights Cancelled Across India Today, Petition Seeks SC Intervention

Another rough day in the aviation industry of India was witnessed when aviation flights cancellation in the IndiGo airlines was reaching 470 in the country on Saturday, the fourth consecutive day of significant operational inconvenience. Following 1,000 cancellations on Friday and 550 on Thursday, passengers still have to deal with delays, soaring airfares, and uncertainty regarding refunds. Despite some improvement in flight operations in Delhi, there are still affected airports in Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Kolkata. The crisis is now in the legal phase, and a petition by the general interest is currently being filed at the Supreme Court where it wants the airline to take action against passenger safety and hold the airline accountable.
Fourth Day of Disruptions Deepens Aviation Chaos
IndiGo is the biggest airline in India, and it is fighting against universal operational issues in four consecutive days. Even on Saturday, over 470 flights were cancelled to the growing inconvenience of lakhs of passengers. According to sources, these hectic situations are caused due to shortage of crews, grounding of aircrafts, air traffic congestion and technical maintenance issues. The ripple effect was felt in a nationwide effect because of the missing of connecting flights and derailing of schedules in large hubs.
Delhi Airport was reported to be normalising gradually, but flights at other major airports were still experiencing intermittent flight delays and sudden cancellations, with no clear communication available to stranded travellers left to spend hours.
Airfare Surge and Refund Crisis Hit Passengers Hard
The IndiGo flights cancellation crisis of a long-distance nature has caused an unprecedented surge in airfares. In key high-demand flights, such as the Delhi-Bengaluru, the prices of tickets soared to outrageous amounts of up to 80,000. This unexpected upsurge has compelled most travellers to cancel individual and corporate arrangements.
Another point of contention is now with regard to refund delays. Thousands of passengers complained about awaiting refunds on cancelation tickets and the government intervened and gave IndiGo the order to clear all refund backlogs by December 7. Both the leadership and the government have threatened to take particular regulatory measures in case of repeat offenses.
Supreme Court Petition Seeks Urgent Intervention
The interference is now a legal problem. A case has been petitioned to get the Supreme Court to intervene to guarantee the rights of passengers, cancellation policy transparency, compensation systems, and responsibility in case of systemic airline failures. The plea also calls on the aviation regulators to construct more powerful consumer protection laws in the event of disruption of airline operations at large scale.
According to legal experts, it may turn out to be a landmark case in transforming the accountability of airlines within India particularly when there is mass flight cancellations and delayed refund cases.
Government Steps In With Fare Caps and Monitoring
The Centre has also temporarily limited fares on major domestic routes to ensure it is not exploited in the course of the crisis. To eliminate predatory fares, regulatory bodies in civil aviation are following the logic of ticket prices and availability closely.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has further enhanced monitoring of the operations systems, maintenance processes and crew deployment of IndiGo to avoid a similar widespread closure.
What Passengers Should Do Now
Victims of current cancellations have been encouraged to monitor the real-time feedback, retain all the booking and cancellation confirmation, and make complaints on refund problems via the official airline helplines and aviation grievance portals. According to legal scholars, written evidence will prove indispensable in case collective compensation comes into the court decision.
