Indian Govt takes a step back on Farm laws, says ‘we couldn’t convince the farmers’

Punjab – It has been over a year since the farmers started protesting against the three farm laws brought inaction by the Indian government and finally to their content, the center has decided to repeal the agricultural laws.

On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the shocking repeal of three controversial farm laws, which many suggest is a popular move ahead of the Uttar Pradesh and Punjab elections.

While announcing the decision, the PM said, “Maybe something was lacking in our Tapasya, which is why we could not convince some farmers about the laws. But today is Prakash Parv, not the time to blame anyone.“

The timing of the news is also commendable as this ‘gift’ has come on the occasion of the Guru Purab festival. Sikhs all over the country celebrate this time as Guru Nanak’s birthday. While talking about the laws, Modi defended the government’s backing for the law saying that they were being introduced as reforms.

He also stressed that whatever the centre did, it was completed with the thoughtfulness of the small and marginal farmers but now what we are doing is for the country. Following the announcement, farm leader Rakesh Tikait stressed that they will not call out the protest till the repeal is completed in the parliament.

Thousands of farmers started protesting near Delhi borders, Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh after the centre announced the details of these laws in September last year. Tikait is waiting for the new parliament session to start, which is scheduled for November 29, after which this protest will be called out.

The farmers have been relentlessly protesting the laws saying that they will deteriorate the living conditions and as they started to move towards Delhi to protest, they were dealt with harsh measures by the centre to limit them to borders. Only a section of them was opposing the laws, but we kept trying to educate and inform them,” said PM Modi during the announcement.
