Indian Businessman Nabbed From Hiding In Dominica
An India diamond merchant aka diamantaire (French usage) has embarrassed his country as he was caught in Dominica recently. The fugitive businessman Mehul Choksi is another case of business gone all wrong like Nirav Modi.
The Criminal Investigation Department in Dominica captured the businessman who had escaped from India after siphoning huge amounts of money from an Indian public bank Punjab National Bank. He escaped in 2017 and took citizenship with Antigua and Barbuda.
He had then used the Citizenship by Investment programme to escape criminal charges and trial against him from India. The scam only came to light once he had escaped. Keeping its relations with India in mind, Antigua contested his citizenship, the case being exposed in courts thereafter.

He was being kept an eye on and disappeared last week, after which the authorities started a manhunt where Chokri was apprehended while escaping through the waterways in Dominica.
Choksi has siphoned Rs. 12000 crores. A yellow notice has been issued against him by Interpol as well and his name has been flagged in other countries as well. Prime Minister Browne recently said his government will revoke his citizenship eventually.
India has had such embarrassments in the past; but with India’s growing relationship with neighboring nations and the West, it has become a little easier to nab such criminals.
