India is world’s worst dope offender: Tops list for third straight time

There is severe crisis in the sporting community in India because the country has been again identified as the worst dope offender in the world taking the top position among global offenders in doping in the third consecutive year, making it one of the Latest News in India. According to the most recent report released by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), Indian athletes are still strongly influenced by the problem of drug abuse and their ignorance despite the improved anti-doping policies. In 2024, India was the strongest in the number of doping violations in the world, with 260 confirmed dope cases. This is a worrying trend considering that India is now gearing up to host some of the important international events such as the 2030 Commonwealth Games and the 2036 Olympics that it could host.
India continues to top global doping charts
The main keyword: India is the worst dope offender in the world is a worrisome piece of information. India was identified as 260 adverse analytical findings (AAFs) and a positivity rate of 3.6% per 100,000 individuals (WADA annual assessment), indicating the highest level of adverse results (ahead of the countries with more than 5,000 samples). In 2024, the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) received 7,113 samples, which are urine samples and blood samples. Among them, 253 urine samples and seven blood samples became positive to the banned substances.
In spite of the growth in the volume of testing, this is the third consecutive year that India tops the list of doping. To a country interested in the creation of a global sporting image, the ranking indicates the systematic flaws in the area of athlete care, medical concerns, and culture of sports-related scientific research.
Comparison with global sporting nations
The figures in India are still very high as compared to the major sporting countries. France had 91 anti-doping rule violations (0.8% rate) out of 11,744 tests, Russia had 76 violations out of 10,514 test (0.7% rate) and China had had 43 failures out of over 24,000 tests (0.2% rate).
An organization known as the United States Anti-Doping Agency with almost the same number of tests performed was able to sustain a positivity rate of 1.1, which was much lower as compared to the 3.6 in India. This is a stark difference in the fact that performance-enhancing substance abuse is a source of serious problems in the athletics culture of India.
NADA’s defence on rising figures
NADA is adamant that the rising figures are due to greater testing capacity and not deterioration of behaviour among athletes. According to the agency, there have been cases which were previously undetected with better sample collection, advanced screening technology, and random testing programmes.
In 2023, 213 dope positives were registered in 5,606 samples in India. The 2024 increase in violations is thus associated with increased test cover. The NADA also states that in 2025, the outcomes are positive: 7, 068 tests had a positivity rate of only 1.5% as of today.
Impact on India’s future sporting identity
India has plans to host the Commonwealth Games 2030, and maybe the 2036 Olympics so it needs to win the confidence of the world once again. The Olympic committee has already noted its concerns with the environment of doping in India. A more stringent anti-doping panel has now been established by the Indian Olympic Association, and a National Anti-Doping Bill was passed by the government to make sporting practices scientific.
