India Wins 5 Medals At Asian Wrestling Championships 2023
Antim Panghal (53 kg) clinched Silver medal, while Anshu Malik (57kg), Sonam Malik (62kg), Manisha (65kg) & Reetika (72kg) earned bronze medals in the championship.
Young Indian wrestler Antim Panghal, who couldn’t beat Akari Fujinami of Japan in the 53kg title match, took home a silver medal at her first Asian Championships.
Anshu Malik (57 kg), Sonam Malik (62 kg), Manisha (65 kg), and Reetika (72 kg) all contributed bronze medal victories to India’s medal haul.
After the Mongolian advanced to the final, Sonam returned to the competition and defeated China’s Xiaojuan Luo 5-1 to win by technical superiority against Erdenesuvd Bat Erdene of Mongolia.
Reetika defeated Svetlana Oknazarova of Uzbekistan by a similar score, and Manisha defeated Kazakhstan’s Albina Kairgeldinova via fall.
Prior to the top match, Panghal, who last year became the first Indian woman wrestler to win the U20 world championship, dominated the 53 kg class, winning without giving up a single point on the maneuvers of her opponents.
With a takedown maneuver that she started with a left-leg attack, Panghal joined in. She defeated Aktenge Keunimjaeva of Uzbekistan 8-1 in her semifinal match, and the only point she dropped was a warning.
Anshu failed to score against the current U23 world champion from Japan, Sae Nanjo, in the 57kg category and fell 5-1. Greco-Roman wrestlers won four of India’s 11 total medals during the competition.
On Tuesday, Nisha Dahiya (68 kg) took home a silver medal and Priya (76 kg) a bronze. The Indian squad has performed admirably overall at the championships.
