Morne Morkel Warns India to Prepare for “Different Beast” in 3rd T20I Against New Zealand

Bowling coach Morne Morkel of the Indian team has cautioned India about the tough conditions they may have to face when they play their third T20 International match against New Zealand in Wellington on October 27. India is at the top of the five match series, 2-0, and Morkel has mentioned the strong winds in Wellington as a major factor that may impact batting, bowling, and fielding in the match.
Both teams are likely to try to retain their momentum in the match.
Wellington’s Strong Winds Pose a Challenge
Before the match, Morkel referred to the wind in Wellington as being a “different beast,” saying that even the building shook because of how intense it was.
The former South African fast bowler mentioned that such weather conditions could impact various elements of cricket, like stance, balance, and a bowler’s ability to deliver the ball.
Wellington is famous for its very strong wind. The weather can make it hard for bowlers to keep their rhythm and control, especially when the wind blows into the bowlers’ faces.
The South African fast bowler mentioned that players do not have much time to adjust to such weather during practice sessions and warmups. He encouraged the team to look on the bright side of the weather situation.
India’s Bowling Unit Must Adapt
It was made clear by Morkel that Indian bowlers should be ready to bowl against the wind as well as with the wind. It was pointed out by the coach that one cannot expect all the bowlers to get the advantage of wind all through the match.
According to the bowling coach, some of the players have to accept the responsibility of bowling against the wind while keeping their bowling accurate and disciplined.
Control over the scoring chances and executing strategies in tough conditions may play an important role in case India faces a coming-back team like New Zealand.
It is also the intention of the coaches to help the players adapt to the changes in the wind direction during the match.
Morkel Backs Bhuvneshwar Kumar
He further justified the selection of veteran fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who made his return to the international circuit after being away for a considerable amount of time. He stated that the fast bowler had to face pressure after returning to the international circuit and hence required time to get his rhythm back.
Morkel advised Bhuvneshwar to rely more on his experience and skills rather than focusing too much on criticism from the outside world.
India Aim to Seal the Series
India enters the third T20I with a 2-0 lead since they have won the previous two games with successful run-chases. Another win for India in Wellington will ensure that they take an unassailable lead in the series.
However, the home conditions may work in favor of New Zealand as well.
The game will be not only a test of cricket skills but also of adaptability on the part of India. Given the wind factor, which might play a vital role in the game, disciplined bowling, good batting, and fast decision-making can make all the difference.
The key message for Morkel is simple – India needs to take the conditions and mentality seriously.
