India Uses Drone Technology To Transport Vaccines To Remote Areas

The Palghar district is going to receive essential healthcare items via drones that will be moving through the tribal areas of Jawhar. Essential medicines will also include Covid-19 vaccines and injections for the remote areas in Palghar.

The project has been approved by the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The district collector Manik Gursal did not mince his words when he said that they were pleased that their two months of relentless work had finally borne fruit.

The project is now going to be used by ten organizations, including state governments and private companies, which will be able to enjoy conditional exemption from the Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) Rules, 2021.

This initiative is being spearheaded by the National Health Mission which has got permission to conduct experimental BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line-Of-Sight) drone flights to deliver essential healthcare items in the tribal areas of Jawhar.

Palghar is an essentially tribal-rich district located along the Maharashtra- Gujarat border. The area has been swamped by deaths due to health issues and malnutrition as well. Due to its geographical limitations, it has been a challenge to get vaccines across the place throughout the vaccination drive.

According to health officers, if the drone network becomes successful, this can become a great way to replace the physical distribution of medication in the future as well.

Drone usage is being used by the Karnataka government to carry out aerial-survey in updating and maintenance of urban property ownership records.

Some other companies are also making use of this technology includes Gangtok Smart City Development project, Steel Authority of India’s (SAIL) plant at West Bengal’s Burnpur, Hyderabad’s Asia Pacific Flight Training Academy, Gujarat’s Blue Ray Aviation, Tractors, and Farm Equipment Limited, Mahindra & Mahindra, Bayer Crop Science, and Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune.
