“I Envy South Filmmakers”: Anurag Kashyap Slams Bollywood, Moves to Bengaluru

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has officially confirmed that he has left Bollywood. He called the industry “too toxic.”
While talking with a news agency The Hindu, Kashyap expressed his frustration and said, “Everyone is chasing unrealistic targets, trying to make the next Rs 500 or Rs 800 crore film. The creative atmosphere is gone.”
The director is known for Gangs of Wasseypur and Dev.D and many hits in bollywood. Recently he relocated to Bengaluru. He plans to work in South Indian cinema where he believes filmmakers have more creative freedom. He previously told The Hollywood Reporter India that he was “disgusted” by the industry’s obsession with box office numbers.
Kashyap said “I envy South filmmakers. They focus on storytelling, while in Bollywood, it’s all about profit margins. The joy of filmmaking is gone.”
Despite stepping away from Bollywood Kashyap remains active in cinema. He is planning to show his talent in souther movie industry. Currently fans can watch him in Dacoit, a Hindi-Telugu bilingual film where he plays a cop alongside Adivi Sesh and Mrunal Thakur. He is also promoting Footage, which is a Malayalam thriller starring Manju Warrier, with its Hindi version set to release on March 7, 2025.
With is showing a big shift towards films driven by creativity rather than commercial pressure.
