Humanitarian aid to Afghanistan: India sends critical medical supplies

Afghanistan -In the first cache of humanitarian aid to Afghanistan since the Taliban takeover in August this year, India has sent 1.6 metric tonnes of life-saving critical medicines. The medical supplies reached capital Kabul on Saturday from Delhi. This was a return flight that had brought home 10 Indians and 94 Afghans from the war torn country a day earlier.

Farid Mamundzay, Afghanistan’s Ambassador to India, expressed gratitude calling the aid a “gift from people of India”.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement, “In view of the challenging humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, the Government of India has dispatched humanitarian assistance consisting of medical supplies on the return flight today.” It further added, “These medicines will be handed over to the representatives of the World Health Organisation (WHO) in Kabul and will be administered at the Indira Gandhi Children Hospital, Kabul.”

India has expressed its vision of providing Afghanistan with an unhindered supply of food and medical aid as the country witnesses a catastrophic crisis with Taliban takeover after a rather rugged and chaotic US troops withdrawal from the nation.

The chartered flight that brought back Indians and Afghans on Friday was brought under India’s “Operation Devi Shakti”. The operation has been launched to evacuate Indians and also Afghans from Afghanistan after the August 15 Taliban takeover. MEA said in a statement, “Under ‘Operation Devi Shakti’, a total of 669 people have now been evacuated from Afghanistan. This comprises 448 Indians and 206 Afghans, which includes members of the Afghan Hindu/Sikh minority community.”
