Huge blow for Congress ahead of Punjab assembly polls as ED arrests CM’s nephew over Money Laundering
Assembly polls are an extremely crucial time for a state party to establish its ground and given the fact that there are several states looking to go into the polls in coming days, political parties are trying to maintain their high ground in all circumstances.
However, Punjab Congress has suffered a huge blow to their reputation as the news about the arrest of the chief minister’s nephew goes viral. The Enforcement Directorate reportedly arrested Charanjit Singh Channi’s nephew Bhupinder Singh Honey in a money laundering case.
If it was a normal day or time of the year, the matter would probably not even make it to the news but with assembly polls in view, every political matter has taken the grip of headlines.
On Friday, the ED officials confirmed that the case is linked to illegal mining in the neighboring state. They pressed the charges under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) on Thursday night.
For obvious reasons, the matter has not gone down well with some of the senior party leaders, who are aware of the scale of damage it can do. Senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge believes that it is nothing more than a political arrest.
While speaking to ANI, Kharge said, “.If action had to be taken against someone,it should’ve been done over 4-5 months, not in one single day.” He added that it has been done purposefully.
