Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra today demanded strict action against those who violate the constitution. She reacted sharply to hate speeches allegedly made at a ‘Dharma Sansad’ in a religious meet in Haridwar, Uttarakhand. The incident took place last week.
The Uttarakhand police registered an FIR (First Information Report) against several unidentified accused over hate speech because of the outrage. The FIR alleged that the speakers of the religious meet used hate speech against the minorities, and targeted Muslims. TMC (Trinamool Congress) also wrote a letter to the Election Commission. Senior Trinamool Congress MP Saket Gokhale and two former service staff chiefs demanded action against the accused.
The FIR has been registered under IPC (Indian Penal Code) section 153A for promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language. The police also registered an FIR against Jitendra Narayan Singh Tyagi, formerly known as Waseem Rizvi.
He recently converted from Islam to Hinduism. Reportedly, he was also part of the religious meeting. Wasim Rizvi was the former chairman of the Uttar Pradesh (UP) Central Shia Waqf Board. However, no arrest has been made yet.
Several opposition parties condemned the hate speech. They said not to play dirty politics. The religious event was organized by Yati Narasimhanand Giri of the Juna Akhada. Reportedly, he is already under police custody for making hate speeches and inciting violence against Muslims.
The event took place in Haridwar from December 17 to 19. Several people participated in religious meet during those days. They all spoke ill about the minorities, especially Muslims. Uttarakhand DGP (Director-General of Police) Ashok Kumar said on Friday that such incidents will not be tolerated in the state. He further said that hate speech against any religious party will not be allowed.
