As per the Union Minister of State for home affairs Nityanand Rai, there are in total 6,08,162 Indians who had renounced their citizenship since the arrival of the Bharatiya Janata Party in power. Out of these people, 1,11,287 people made the decision this year while others were a compilation of data from all the six remaining years.
As far the ones who had applied for India’s citizenship majorly include people from Pakistan and Afghanistan. Nearly 7,782 applied from Islamabad while there were 795 applicants from Kabul. Experts have projected that in the coming month’s Afghans will be increasing because of the Taliban takeover.
The Indian population living abroad is increasing with every passing day and at present, the official data stands at 100 lakh Indians. With the current situation in consideration, the officials have confirmed that they have not yet taken a call regarding the pan-India National Register of Citizens and they will soon make the announcement.
However, the center also stressed that those who come under the criteria of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) can go ahead with applying for Indian citizenship after the rule of the law is notified. The law came into effect on January 10, 2020, and was received with a lot of criticism and protests all over the country.
It has been opposed severely since the time it was first suggested as a notification and it also became the prime reason behind the Delhi riots that had resulted in injuring 200 people. The rules are being prepared and the center has asked for another six months to announce the rule under CAA.
