Government Bans ULLU and ALTBalaji: 25 OTT Platforms Blocked for Obscene Content

The Indian government has blocked 25 OTT platforms, causing the spread of inappropriate content. Through this significant crackdown, the government blocks ULLU, ALTBalaji, and 23 other digital OTT platforms on the allegations that they carry obscene and adult content that contravenes Indian legislation. Millions of users are affected by this decision since they are regular viewers of platforms.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting instructed the internet service providers to block access to these websites and mobile apps. The move was followed by regulators after they discovered that these platforms were broadcasting inappropriate content material containing sexual scenes, nudity, and many similar content.

Why Did the Government Ban These OTT Platforms?
The policy of banning ULLU and other websites followed an evaluation of the contents of the websites by the government. These streaming services, according to the official sources, were a space for content that was deemed to be obscene, vulgar, and even pornographic in certain cases.Legal Procedure on which the Ban is Based: The government made recourse to the provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000, and the IT (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, to pass blocking orders. ISPs and other screeners were officially informed to suspend access to the above-mentioned websites and mobile applications as soon as possible.
