Goa Congress Says, “ Won’t Repeat 2017 Mistake, Planning for Hung Assembly Scenario”

Last updated on March 10th, 2022 at 06:29 am

Ahead of the March 10 Goa election results, the Goa Congress said it will not repeat its 2017 mistake in 2022. The Congress in Goa planned to ensure that there is no repeat of 2017, where the grand old party won 17 seats but was unable to form the government in Goa.

The Congress is already planning for a hung assembly scenario. Goa has 40 constituencies, and the number of MLAs (Member of the Legislative Assembly) needed to form the government is 21.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is hoping to win the election. In 2017, the BJP won the election and Manohar Parrikar was elected Chief Minister. The Congress is also confident to win the election this time. Senior Congress leaders have already arrived in Goa to work on a strategy to form the government in the state. Congress is already in touch with regional parties and independent candidates.

According to CNN-News18, P Chidambaram, former union finance minister and observer for Goa, and desk in-charge, Dinesh Rao, have begun political negotiations in Goa in case of a hung assembly.

Reportedly, Congress will form a post-poll alliance with political parties that are against the BJP. Rao also talked with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Trinamool Congress (TMC).

The AAP had contested the 2022 Goa elections without any pre-poll alliance. The TMC had a pre-poll alliance with the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP). The MGP was Goa’s first ruling party after the end of Portuguese colonial rule in 1961.

According to media reports, senior leaders will be meeting all Congress candidates individually. A senior functionary from Goa Congress told CNN-News18, “We are confident of forming a government and have learnt our lessons in 2017. We don’t want to repeat the mistake.”

Michael Lobo, who quit from the BJP, and joined the Congress before the elections, is also confident of Congress winning the election.
