Engineers Day is observed on September 15 (1860), the birthday of Dr. M. Visvesvaraya, who received the Bharat Ratna in 1955, as a result of the exceptional engineering work completed (dams, reservoirs, and hydroelectric projects).
Engineers Day was declared by the Indian government in 1968, and since then it has always been observed on this day.

Precursor Of Economic Planning In India
The Institution of Engineers India referred to Dr. M. Vishweshwaraiya as the “precursor of economic planning in India” in addition to his contributions to engineering (IEI).
His books “Planned Economy of India” and “Reconstructing India” were released in 1920 & 1934, respectively. While serving as Diwan of Mysore, he was knighted in 1915 and received the Bharat Ratna award in 1955.
