Enforcement Directorate Raids 10 Locations Across Maharashtra in Illegal Human Egg Extraction Racket

In an investigation related to the money laundering case against an alleged human egg extraction racket, the ED has raided 10 places in the state of Maharashtra. These searches were conducted on October 16 at hospitals, IVF centers, and other places in Thane, Baramati, and Nashik.
These raids were conducted by the ED’s Mumbai Zonal Office-II under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002. In the course of the raid, officers have confiscated Rs 29 lakh in cash, frozen bank lockers and mutual funds, and collected documents and digital evidence.
Financially Vulnerable Women Allegedly Targeted
As per investigators, this network enticed women who were in difficult economic situations by offering financial incentives for the donation of their eggs. The middlemen were said to arrange for such women to be connected to the IVF clinics and the ART banks via firms that had different proprietors.
These women were said to have been taken to hospitals in Maharashtra and other states to extract their eggs. The authorities are checking on whether the process was conducted in accordance with medical rules and protocols.
The case surfaced after a police investigation in Badlapur early in the year. It is believed that more than 40 women were victims of exploitation through the extraction of eggs from them repeatedly. One instance where there was particular concern was when a woman had her eggs extracted 33 times.
Alleged Forgery and Medical Violations Under Probe
Further allegations relate to the forgery of documents to mask the identities of donors and perform multiple treatments on donors. Allegedly, the documents consist of identity proofs, consents, medical reports, and others designed to make the donor appear to be qualified for the procedure.
There are questions as to whether such allegations comply with India’s Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Act of 2021, which provides protection to egg donors and prohibits trade in human gametes.
Multiple egg harvesting poses additional risks to the health of women since the process involves the use of medications under unsupervised conditions. This case study will focus on intermediary and healthcare institutions suspected of involvement in such activities.
ED Traces Financial Transactions
The ED has begun tracing the financial trail involving the suspected network, which includes payments made to the women as well as to intermediaries and other investments and properties that might be connected with the alleged proceeds of crime.
The ED has also found new donor agents and traced immovable properties and investments in the course of their investigation.
The search warrants represent yet another step in the investigation of the suspected exploitation and financial irregularities in the fertility treatment industry. Further steps will depend on the findings of the investigators. The allegations are still pending before the judicial process and will decide on the responsibility of the suspects and institutions.
