Earthquake Hits Dharamshala: Current Ground Situation, Hotel Damages, and Travel Guidelines for Weekend Tourists

The area of Dharamshala experienced some quakes including one which measured 5.0 magnitude in the night of June 5. The quakes hit at 10:04 PM with their epicenter at Dhauladhar Ranges lying on the border between Kangra and Chamba district, about 40 km away from Dharamshala.
The tremors were felt across the regions of Kangra, Chamba, McLeod Ganj and other surrounding areas, forcing many people to run out as a safety measure. However, there have been no reports of any fatalities and damages so far.
What Is the Ground Situation in Dharamshala Right Now?
By Saturday afternoon, life had returned to near-normal conditions in Dharamshala and other tourist places around it.
According to local officials, although the tremors caused panic amongst people, no instances of building collapse or major disruption occurred. It is important to note that emergency services have kept watch on the situation due to the fact that this area is located in Seismic Zone V of India.
The main earthquake resulted in a period of strong tremors for those in Dharamshala, and several aftershocks followed that night.
Have Any Hotels Been Damaged?
One of the greatest worries for weekend travelers relates to the state of hotels in Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj.
As things stand, no major reports on the state of destruction and evacuation of hotels have been filed by any authority or agency regarding the earthquake.
Most hotels, guesthouses, and homestays have continued functioning normally.
Yet, travelers should ensure that their reservations at the hotel or place of stay are confirmed by the owner of the establishment if they wish to stay in an older structure or one built in hilly areas.
Why Experts Are Still Watching the Situation Closely
Although 5.0 magnitude earthquakes are classified as moderate, the geological location of Dharamshala makes all earthquakes important.
The Kangra region falls under Seismic Zone V of India, which is its most hazardous zone. The reason behind this is that while small earthquakes may release stress from tectonic plates, it does not negate the likelihood of bigger tremors in the future.
It does not necessarily mean that tourists need to be scared when visiting the place, but it does mean they should keep themselves informed.
Should You Cancel Your Weekend Trip?
According to the information at hand, there has not been any travel warning against visiting Dharamshala from the authorities.
Road links are working, hotels are in operation, and tourist sites are continuing to receive guests without major disruptions in tourism facilities.
The situation seems to be under control for those who had planned a trip for the weekend. However, others who have elderly relatives or small children may prefer to wait for more information.
