West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee came to the rescue of the students when Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal has put in formal request with PM Narendra Modi to cancel the terminal exams for colleges and universities. At the state level, according to formal communication given by Manish Sisodia, deputy chief minister.
Delhi government has already decided to cancel all Delhi state university exams including final exams and this will be communicated to the Centre in real time. Additionally, Sisodia has communicated via twitter that these Delhi state run universities have been asked to promote their students and award them degrees adopting some methodology of evaluation so that the students can apply for jobs or higher education.
Meanwhile, Ms. Banerjee has taken a different stance and written to the PM requesting him to figure a way out and not think of cancelling the examinations. She referred to revised guidelines issued by the HRD Ministry and UGC with regard to conducting the terminal examinations in colleges and universities.
The Covid situation has put immense mental pressure on students and teachers together. With no access to school environment, recreation or free time, many teachers are reporting burnout situations. Most classes are being conducted online. The study patterns have changed and this newness may not do justice to the educational requirements of students at college and university levels.
While schools are continuing to conduct classes and assignments to assess children and pass them to the next grade, college and universities have been asked to use a different kind of assessment system without putting pressure of formal examination patterns.
