By the current trend of PPE (Personal protective equipment) production in India touching more than 3 lakhs per day last week, it is estimated that a total of 2 crore PPE can be manufactured in India by the end of June.
PPE is the protective equipment used by medical professionals, healthcare workers and those coming in contact with the COVID-19 patients while treating or taking care of them.
India at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic had zero PPE being manufactured in India. But now the indigenous production of PPE and N95 masks in India has brought a great relief to the fight against coronavirus.
Till date around 50 lakh PPE have been manufactured in India and 50 lakh more are expected to be ready by this month end.
According to the sources from Textile ministry, it is expected that India will most likely cross the mark of 2 crore in PPE production by June end.
In his address to nation on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi boasted about the rise in PPE and N95 mask production in India from practically zero to 2 lakh being manufactured daily. Mr. Modi stressed on the importance of being “Aatmnirbhar” or self-reliant. Under this agenda of “Make in India”, India has upgraded the indigenous production of essentialities like PPE and N95 masks to fight COVID-19 pandemic.

This is a major boost to the healthcare system in India. It must be noted that the Modi government was severely criticized for the shortage of PPE kits. The initial delay was due to the local manufacturing units being readied for the mass production of PPE kits, as clarified by the government official.
The manufactured PPE are to be distributed to all the states and union territories for medical personnel taking care of coronavirus patients.
