Columbia University Calls Rape And Murder As ‘Revolutionary Violence’
Columbia University, a renowned institution in New York, found itself at the center of controversy due to a planned event by its School of Social Work. The event, scheduled for December 6, was titled “a teach-in and discussion” on the “significance of the October 7th Palestinian counteroffensive.”
This proposed event has been the subject of intense criticism and backlash, primarily because of its perceived justification of violent actions attributed to Hamas against Israel.
The assistant professors of management at Columbia Business School, raised alarm over this event. They expressed their shock and concern, stating, it’s time for all of us to raise our voices!
The School of Social Work at Columbia University can’t allow a ‘teach-in’ that sees rape as a ‘counteroffensive’ and calls murder and kidnap of children ‘revolutionary violence’!
This proposed discussion at Columbia University drew widespread criticism from various quarters, including students and social media users.
Many voiced concerns about the safety and well-being of students on campus, especially those directly affected by the events in question. Some accused the university of promoting a narrative that justified terrorism.
In response to the intense public outcry, Columbia University had to take a decisive step. On December 5, 2023, the university had to cancel the event. The Columbia School of Social Work (CSSW) clarified that the students who organized the event had not sought approval and that it was not a CSSW-sponsored event.
In a statement, CSSW emphasized its commitment to free speech but firmly stated that it does not condone language promoting violence, which contradicts the university’s values.
Following the cancellation, the professors and students who had opposed this event, appreciated the decision, describing it as “A rare moment of sanity.” They also questioned whether there would be repercussions for organizations that don’t follow the university’s rules.
