Centre asks farmers to name representatives for the MSP committee

Punjab -The Centre has asked protesting farmers to suggest five names to be part of the MSP (Minimum Support Price) committee.  Minimum Support Price is a form of market intervention by the Government of India to insure farmers against any sharp fall in farm prices.

The Haryana state government recently claimed that it is already procuring the highest number of crops at Minimum Support Price. Reportedly, the farmer leader Darshan Pal said that the Central government has sought five names from the main body of protesting farmers, the Samkyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), to discuss issues like the promotion of zero-budgeting farming and making MSP more effective for the farmers.

The SKM is the body that has protested against the three farm laws since 2020. According to The Indian Express, general secretary of Jamhuri Kisan Sabha, Kulwant Singh Sandhu said, “ We have received a message from the government regarding the nomination of names of five people to be included in the committee. The Samyukt Kisan Morcha  will meet on Wednesday to decide the names of the five people.”

During the winter session of the parliament, recently the parliament approved the repeal of farm laws. The decision was taken after getting approval from both the houses of Parliament. Prime Minister Narendra Modi in November 2021 said that the government decided to repeal the three farm laws.

The decision was taken after one year of ongoing protests across the country. Framers from across India have been camping outside Delhi since November 2020 to protest against the laws. The protestors from across the country came to Shaheen Bagh in Delhi. They sat in tents on one side of the road for months. They demanded the central government to repeal the law. The protest only paused when the lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic came into place.
