4 Devastating Boeing Aircraft Crashes in India Since 2000

From the turn of the new millennium, air travel has become increasingly safe, yet accidents involving commercial aircraft still occur. Between 2000 and 2025, there have been 107 Boeing aircraft accidents globally that met criteria for hull loss and commercial operation. Out of these, 4 crashes occurred in India, involving both domestic and international carriers, with varying levels of severity and survival outcomes.
1. Air India Boeing 787 Crash

A devastating crash of an Air India Boeing 787 during final approach to Ahmedabad resulted in nearly complete loss of life on board, along with multiple ground fatalities. This incident stands as one of India’s deadliest aviation disasters in the modern era and raised serious questions about aircraft systems and weather-related decision-making.

2. Air India Express Crash (Kozhikode)

Flight IX-1344 skidded off a tabletop runway during landing amid heavy rain. The aircraft broke apart, resulting in 17 deaths, including both pilots. Despite the impact, the majority of passengers survived, owing to swift evacuation efforts and emergency response, although the incident highlighted risks at tabletop airports.

In one of the worst aviation disasters in India, a Dubai–Mangalore Air India Express flight overshot the runway and fell into a gorge. The crash led to a post-impact fire, and only 8 passengers survived. The incident prompted a major review of safety standards at table-top runways.

The Alliance Air flight crashed into a residential area while attempting to land at Patna Airport due to engine failure and pilot error. The tragedy killed most on board and several on the ground, and remains one of the early aviation disasters of the 21st century in India.
