Billie Jean King Cup: Ankita Raina Led India To 2-1 Win Over Thailand
Indian Tennis player Ankita Raina led India’s charge, won two matches and secured 2-1 win over Thailand in the Billie Jean King Cup tournament.
India defeated Thailand 2-1 in the Asia/Oceania Group I tournament on the opening day of the Billie Jean King Cup on Tuesday. Seasoned Ankita Raina won the second singles match and then teamed with Rutuja Bhosale to win the clinching doubles match.
Bhosale was defeated by Luksika Kumkhum 2-6, 1-6 in the opening match, putting India behind 1-0 in the Pool A contest.
Raina’s victory over Peangtarn Plipuech in the second singles match, 5-7, 6-1, 6-3, evened the score at 1-1 and placed the onus on her to bring India back into the match.
In the decisive doubles match, Raina and Bhosale overcame a deficit to defeat Kumkhum and Plipuech of Thailand 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
As soon as the Indians defeated their opponents in the opening match of the second set, they did not turn back and easily won the match. On Wednesday, India will take on the host nation, Uzbekistan.
Ankita Raina, a veteran member of the Indian women’s tennis squad, was scheduled to represent India at the Asia-Oceania Billie Jean King Cup in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
Ankita has served the Indian team for a decade, and she was excited to perform at her best in the Billie Jean King Cup with her new teammates Shrivalli Bhamidipaty, Rutuja Bhosale, Sahaja Yamalapalli, and Vaidehi Chaudhari.
Ankita has a strong reputation in the competition, having defeated some of the top players in the region, such as Yulia Punitseva, Zhu Lin, and Nao Hibino. She has an 18-16 record in singles and an 8-6 record in doubles.
Ankita had been diligently preparing for the competition, and she has recently demonstrated excellent form on the professional circuit. She feels fitter than ever previously and has made specific enhancements to her performance.
The tournament featured a formidable field, with India, China, Japan, Korea, Thailand, and Uzbekistan among the participants.
The teams are competing in a round-robin tournament, with the best two qualifying for the World Group play-off and the bottom two being relegated to group-2.
The Indian team is confident and prepared to perform their best against the tournament’s hosts Uzbekistan on Wednesday.
