Bengaluru’s Second Airport: What You Need to Know
Karnataka’s infrastructure minister MB Patil is ready with a plan to gift Bengaluru a new airport! Bengaluru will get its second airport soon. The exact location is yet to be decided.
The location will be decided after a discussion of passenger demands and connectivity to the existing Kempegowda International Airport (KIA).
Minister Patil highlighted potential areas like Sarjapura and Kanakapura Road for their strong passenger potential, while places like Tumkur and Dabaspete are favored for their connectivity to KIA. These details will be scrutinized further in upcoming meetings with the chief minister and cabinet ministers.
As for timing the current exclusivity agreement with Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) expires in 2032 potentially opening the door for a new airport by 2033. The government is already planning, and focusing on land acquisition and compensation processes.

When the 2nd airport news started getting hot Patil drew comparisons with cities like New York and London which have multiple airports, and noted Mumbai’s example where airports are just 36 kilometers apart. He also mentioned Tamil Nadu’s plans for an airport in Hosur questioning how the exclusivity clause with BIAL might apply in such cases.
KIA is currently India’s third busiest airport after Delhi and Mumbai. This airport handled over 37.5 million passengers and over 400,000 tonnes of cargo last year. It’s projected to reach maximum passenger capacity by 2033 and peak cargo capacity by 2040.
