Barium-Based Firecracker Formulations Undergo Fresh Testing Ahead of Upcoming Festive Season

As the festive season nears, the decades-old debate in India on “green crackers” is back again. The government has informed the Supreme Court that it intends to undertake new testing to evaluate the effects of the new generation of firecrackers with less amount of barium in their composition. This comes in the wake of a tussle between two government agencies. While CSIR-NEERI approves of some of the new formulations, the Central Pollution Control Board has reservations about the continued presence of barium.
