A History of the ICC Champions Trophy

The ICC Men’s Champions Trophy itself was previously called the ICC Knockout Trophy. The competition itself is held every four years. Played in a One Day International (ODI) format it is organized by the International Cricket Council.
It was launched in relation to the financing of cricket development in those countries where it has hardly made its entry in the sports hall of fame.
Bangladesh hosted the first Champions Trophy in 1998. By this time the Cricket World Cup had completed 23 years. The first two tournaments were hosted in Bangladesh and Kenya, both of which are ICC Associate members; the purpose behind this was to help promote the game of cricket in those countries and the money generated was supposed to be used in cricket development there. The tournament has since adopted an informal rotation system for hosting, with all ICC members having been given the chance to host it since 2002.
In 2009, the format changed; now only the top eight teams in the ICC ODI rankings (six months prior to the tournament) would be invited. The Champions Trophy only went on a break from 2017. The ICC wanted to simplify their schedule and ensure that only one major global tournament takes place for each format of cricket.
Then, with much surprise, the ICC announced in 2021 that the Champions Trophy would go back on! It should take place in 2025 in Pakistan and in 2029 in India. If India refuses to play in Pakistan for political reasons, India will also not participate in any ICC events staged in Pakistan.
