YouTube will begin deducting taxes from content creators outside United States

On Wednesday, Google announced that YouTube is rolling out some changes in how payments will be conducted for partnered creators outside the United States and added that it will begin deducting U.S. taxes from future payments from the platform beginning from June 2021. 

Numerous content creators were very upset with it, particularly those who weren’t making any Google AdSense revenues.

YouTube stated in an email to creators to present their tax information in AdSense so that they are able to access the correct amount of tax that will be deducted.

The new changes apply to all creators outside America, including creators from India. However, there will not be any comparable tax deductions for people settled in the United States.

On YouTube’s support page, it stated that their parent company Google has the commitment under Chapter 3 of the US Internal Revenue Code to collect the tax data, retain taxes, and report to the Internal Revenue Service when a creator earns royalty revenues from YouTube viewers from America. This has brought about the execution of the new taxes for YouTube income. 

YouTube has made a video to explain the recent changes and assist creators to provide their tax details. Through their local social media channel, they have also tweeted about the new rules.

If a YouTube creator is not able to provide their tax details by May 31, the company may have to deduct up to 24% of its complete profit around the world. Numerous creators are censuring YouTube for its new tax deduction strategy as it takes a cut of income from the advertisements it serves on the platform.

Moreover, if a content creator is able to provide their tax details, there will be withholding within 0–30% of the total earning they produce from viewers in the US. Especially for India, the withholding percentage is set at 15% of the total profit.
