Why Does India Need To Ban Iranian Apple Import?

Iran -Kashmiri apple growers are being hit really bad by yet another Iranian irritant. Illegally imported Iranian apples are entering the Indian market through the Wagah border route, confirmed sources have stated.

The local apple growers in India are now seeking help from the Centre to stop this kind of illegally sale in Gujarat and Punjab. Routing through Afghanistan, the apples find their way first to Punjab and then elsewhere, hurting the local Kashmiri crop badly.

This has been confirmed through a formal statement made by Fayaz Ahmad, president of Asia’s second-largest fruit market in north Kashmir’s Sopore. Currently, three crore apples inboxes are lying unsold in Kashmir. Ahmad has further confirmed that the rate of the domestic apple has crashed as a result of which the growers in Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand have suffered huge economic losses.

For many of these dwellers on the hills, apples are a staple breading winning deal and do not yield results throughout the year. They are sold more in cold winter months but are found in hotter parts of India through the cold storage method of consumption.

Local growers are now asking PM Narendra Modi to ban the sale of these Iranian varieties in India, with immediate effect. According to local MPs what really also goes in the Iranian favor is the fact that these sales are tax free. “If growers do not get a good price for fruit outside the state mandis, they will stop using cold stores. Usually, orchardists store some part of their produce in cold storage facilities that have cropped up across the valley in the last few years in the hope of selling fruits in off-seasons to reap rich dividends. In wake of the unchecked dumping of Iranian markets into Indian markets, farmers would refrain from storing their products and using the cold storage facilities,” said MPs
