Inside Story: Why Did India Skip the UN Vote on Israel?

India decided not to vote on a United Nations resolution about Israel and Gaza. The resolution, put together by Jordan, called for peace but did not talk about Hamas. India felt that any plan talking about peace should also mention groups like Hamas, who are involved in the violence.

India backed Canada’s idea to include a paragraph in the resolution that condemns Hamas. So, India is not against the goal of the resolution; it simply felt that the text was not complete.

India’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Yojna Patel, said that violence shouldn’t be a way to solve problems. She mentioned that terrorism is a serious issue that affects everyone, regardless of their country or background.

She said the world should not accept any excuses for acts of terror. India wants all sides to act responsibly to reduce the suffering and loss of life.

Regarding the Israel-Palestine issue, India supports a “two-state solution.” This means that India wants Palestine to be an independent country, existing peacefully alongside Israel. India asks both sides to stop the violence and start talking for peace.

India’s choice to abstain from the UN vote shows it wants a balanced approach. By not voting, India is saying, “We won’t support a plan that doesn’t mention all parties involved,” which in this case includes Hamas.

This lines up with India’s zero-tolerance policy on terrorism. India thinks you can’t talk about peace and ignore groups that are part of the violence.

India’s support for Canada’s proposal makes sense. It adds to the resolution by condemning Hamas, aiming for a fuller picture of the problem.

The stance on terrorism is strong and clear. India says terrorism is bad, no matter who does it or where it happens. No excuses accepted.

On the Israel-Palestine issue, India keeps to its long-held belief in a two-state solution. It wants both Israel and Palestine to exist peacefully, side by side. This shows India is consistent in its foreign policy, looking for balanced and fair solutions for everyone.
