WHO Chief Scientist says that India might be entering the pandemic stage of COVID-19

As India reported 37,593 new cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, WHO chief scientist Dr. Soumya Swaminathan said India might be entering the endemic stage of COVID-19.

This stage is seen when the population learns to live with a virus. She mentions that we would be in that position that we have achieved vaccine coverage, say 70 percent, and then countries can get back to normal.

Along with Covidsheild, even clearance will be given to Covaxin as one of its authorized vaccines by mid-September. It should be noted that given the size of India and the heterogeneity of population and immunity status in different parts of the country, the Covid situation may continue to see ups and downs in the number of active cases in the various parts of the nation.

Dr. Swaminathan further added that Indians may be entering some kind of stage of endemicity where low-level transmission or moderate level transmission is going on but we are not seeing the kinds of exponential growth and peaks that we saw a few months ago.

And as far as India is concerned with the heterogeneity of population and immunity status it is very feasible that the situation may continue like this with ups and downs in different parts of the country.

It is more prominent where there are more susceptible populations, so those groups who were perhaps less affected by first and second waves or those areas with low levels of vaccine coverage we could see peaks and troughs for the next several months.

It is also believed that vaccination has to be a prerequisite at least at the global level to permit them for travelling. The very first thing to do is to get rid of the inequality and encourage people to get vaccinated quickly.
